Whilst presenting at the International EcoAcoustics conference earlier this year, we learnt of new sound recording equipment that has the potential to revolutionise how we undertake acoustic surveys. The recorders are the not much larger than a match box. In conjunction with the team from Symbolix we have started testing their capability. First up we are looking at sound attenuation testing of high frequency sound at varying distances and the influence of being placed in a plastic bag, as is commonly done for protection from the weather. We have also set the recorders up in an array with a moving sound generator to test if the direction of the sound generator can be determined. Keep watching this space for more in the coming weeks.
